Eine kleine russische Provinzstadt zu Beginn des vergangenen Jahrhunderts. Zwischen Arbeitern und Fabrikbesitzern toben erbitterte Auseinandersetzungen um faire Löhne und Arbeitsbedingungen. Pawel und eine Gruppe junger Revolutionärer beschäftigen sich mit der marxistischen Lehre und gelangen zu der Überzeugung, dass das herrschende Unrecht nicht hinnehmbar ist und die Welt verändert werden muss. Sie nehmen ihre Lage selbst in die Hand – trotz Drangsal, Schikane und Verhaftungen durch die Polizei. Pelagea Wlassowa, Pawels Mutter, einer einfachen Arbeiterin, behagt der Eifer ihres Sohnes zunächst nicht, doch aus Sorge und Zuneigung unterstützt sie ihn dennoch. Um ihn zu beschützen, beginnt sie, im Geheimen für die junge revolutionäre Zelle zu arbeiten. Allmählich begehrt die unpolitische Mutter mit viel Witz, Herz, Menschenverstand und Optimismus gegen die Unterdrückung des Proletariats auf. Sie lernt lesen und schreiben und lässt von ihrem Kampf für bessere Verhältnisse auch dann nicht ab, als ihr Sohn ihm zum Opfer fällt. Sie wird zur Mutter einer ganzen Bewegung. In seinem Lehrstück »Die Mutter« von 1932 entwirft Bertolt Brecht, ausgehend von dem gleichnamigen Roman Maxim Gorkis, mit den Mitteln des epischen Theaters die Geschichte einer Emanzipation, ein Lob auf das Lernen und das Aufbegehren für eine menschlichere Zukunft.

Zusammen mit einem Ensemble Studierender der Hochschule für Schauspielkunst »Ernst Busch«, die am Beginn ihrer Theaterlaufbahn stehen, und der Schauspielerin Ursula Werner, von 1974 bis 2009 Protagonistin und Ensemblemitglied des Maxim Gorki Theaters Berlin, blicken Peter Kleinert und sein Team mit diesem Stück aus einer Zeit, in der die Utopie einer herrschaftsfreien Gesellschaft noch möglich schien, auf eine Gegenwart, die Revolution und Veränderung immer nötiger hat.
