Jan Pappelbaum

Set designer and head of set and costume design at the Schaubühne since 2000. Born in Dresden. Competitive volleyball player and bricklaying apprentice in Leipzig. Studied architecture at the now Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and worked in student theatre. From 1993, assistant to the set designer Dieter Klaß for »Urfaust-Kubus« at the Weimar Art Festival under the artistic direction of Manfred Karge where he first collaborated with directing students from the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin including Tom Kühnel, Thomas Ostermeier and Robert Schuster. In 1994, first work as a solo set designer at the bat-Studiotheater in Berlin for »King Ubu« (directed by Claudia Bauer). From 1995, set designer at theatres including in Berlin, Bremen, Dresden, Potsdam and Weimar. Since 1998, longstanding collaboration with Robert Schuster and Tom Kühnel as set designer at Schauspiel Frankfurt and, from 1999, as head of set and costume design at the TAT in Frankfurt am Main. Longstanding collaboration with Thomas Ostermeier, first at the Deutsches Theater »Baracke« in Berlin and then, from 2000, at the Schaubühne. Further collaborations with Ostermeier in Vienna, Moscow, Amsterdam and Lausanne. Designed sets for operas at the Staatsoper Stuttgart, Staatsoper Berlin, Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar and the Vienna State Opera, all directed by Andrea Moses. Workshops and solo exhibitions in Oslo (2009), Kraków (2011), Venice (2015), Hong Kong (2018) and Skopje (2019). In 2006, publication of his book »Dem Einzelnen ein Ganzes / A Whole for the Parts: Jan Pappelbaum. Bühnen / Stages« by Theater der Zeit.
