Blackbird

by David Harrower
Direction: Benedict Andrews

German translation by Angela Kingsford Röhl
German language premiere

They used to be a love couple then. Una was twelve and Peter was fourty-eight when they were caught together and Peter was arrested. Sixteen years later, Peter is now called Ray and works in a company that produces appliances for dental surgeries. He served his sentence, is regularly dating a woman and has broken with the past. Only Una can’t get over what happened in those days. Having a dentist’s appointment, she spots a picture of Peter in a magazine and decides to meet him… »Blackbird« shows the encounter of two people whose lives are characterized by a shared experience. But what exactly is it that these two people, a grown-up and a child, went through together? Two drastically different versions of the past and two different truths are clashing.

DAVID HARROWER is the author of »Kill the Old Torture Their Young«, »Dark Earth«, »Knives in Hens«, the German premiere of which was directed by Thomas Ostermeier and was invited to the Theatertreffen in Berlin in 1998.

BENEDICT ANDREWS, born in 1972, was resident director at the Sydney Theatre Company between 2000 and 2003, where he directed »Mr Kolpert« by David Gieselmann and »Fireface« by Marius von Mayenburg. In the 2003/2004 season, he directed »Cleansed« by Sarah Kane at the Schaubühne.
