Blasted

by Sarah Kane
Direction: Thomas Ostermeier

German translation by Nils Tabert

Ian, a journalist, and young Cate enter a luxurious hotel room in Leeds. Ian is attracted to Cate, but she rejects him. During the night he rapes Cate, and after she has run away, a soldier breaks into the hotel room. The soldier tortures and rapes Ian, and the hotel room is wrecked by a bomb. After this he shoots himself. Cate returns with a strange baby, which dies a short time later. Cate goes out again to find something to eat, but meanwhile hunger has driven Ian to extremes...
Sarah Kane’s first play »Blasted» made her well-known in 1995. It was followed by »Phaedra’s Love» (1996), »Cleansed» and »Crave» (1998). In February 1999 she committed suicide. Her final play, »4.48 Psychosis» was premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in June 2000.
This production of »Blasted» means that the Schaubühne is now showing the entire works of Sarah Kane in its repertoire.
