After a diploma course in »cultural education« in Hildesheim, Uta Plate took over the direction of the African-German theatre group Rangi Moja. Her publication »Fremd bleiben« (Remaining Foreign) describes intercultural work in the theatre (co-author Wiebke von Bernstorff, IKO-Verlag, 1997). In 1996, she moved on to the Theater Nordhausen, where she established the project »Theater im Knast« (Theatre Behind Bars) in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice in Thuringia. For two and a half years, she developed and staged plays together with young people imprisoned at the detention centre Ichtershausen. In addition, she organised theatre workshops together with children in a home for those seeking asylum and with senior citizens in an old people’s home. She has belonged to the ensemble at the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz since the 1999/2000 season.
