Cast: Robert Enckell, Minna Haapkylä, Johanna Jauhiainen
The domineering but lonely Madame Lemarchand finds the perfect maid in young Hilda – beautiful, restrained, flawless. Hilda's husband Franck is rewarded handsomely for providing Hilda's services but eventually he can neither deny nor prevent the relentless appropriation of his wife by the extravagantly verbose Madame Lemarchand. Lemarchand takes Hilda into her possession, dresses her, coifs her and sucks the life out of her. When she is finally reduced to an empty shell, Hilda arouses only Madame Lemarchand’s contempt and prompts Franck to search for a replacement wife. »Hilda« is a play about the power of words and the wordlessness of the vanquished. The audience may anticipate Hilda’s resistance, but it transpires that she has no voice.
Marie NDiaye [b.1967, Pithiviers/France, living in Berlin] is the author of numerous novels and theatrical texts. Her play »Papa doit manger« was the second work of a female author to be included in the repertoire of the Comédie-Française. Winner of the renowned Prix Goncourt, NDiaye's work is primarily concerned with characters within certain human communities and the subsequent emerging processes of alienation and transformation. The world of Marie NDiaye's literature is marked by fear, humour, cruelty, humiliation and uncertainty; it always teeters on the edge of fantasy.
Cilla Back [b.1971, Finland] studied theatre history, set design and child psychology at Perugia, Italy and then directing at the Scuola del Piccolo Teatro in Milan. Since 1997 she has been teaching and directing at theatres and festivals throughout Finland, Sweden, Italy, Russia, Germany and France. Under the exchange programme of the European theatre network Prospero, she was elected »Artistic Leader and Associated Artist« for Finland.
A production of the Tutkivan teatterityön keskus, University of Tampere/Finland, in collaboration with the European theatre network Prospero, and in co-production with the Tampereen työväen teatteri.

»Hilda«
