Solidarity with the students and teachers of the Theatre and Film School in Budapest
As the artistic director of a theatre and as a teacher for many years I am deeply convinced that to study theatre does not mean to train one’s skills as a guardian of a canon of literature, preserving »national values« whatever this means. I have experienced that one of the most essential points in the education of young theatre makers is to open up their eyes for the social and political issues around them. In developing their individual artistic approaches, they have to learn to reflect the world they are living in in an open minded, critical way. Therefore a university teaching theatre has to provide an open minded, liberal, encouraging and supportive atmosphere to secure the freedom of art, now and for future generations.
In this sense I want to express my full solidarity with the students and lectures of the SZFE!
