Green Schaubühne

What is our vision?

The Schaubühne views itself as having a social and cultural responsibility towards nature and society, with the aim of using ecological and economic resources sensibly for the benefit of all those involved and acting in a sustainable manner.

By sustainability, we mean decarbonisation and development towards Net Zero by 2035. We aim to constantly increase our added value for society and thus take on a pioneering role. In doing so, we want to provide impetus for our audience and other cultural institutions - both nationally and internationally.

Schaubühne does not exist without its employees. We therefore see our employees as the company's strongest resource and want to strengthen and support them in all areas of life. Schaubühne stands for an appreciative and careful use of all resources.

As a theatre with a strong focus on national and international exchange and discourse, we see it as our responsibility to shape this as sustainably as possible - both in our own planning and implementation, as well as in initiating suggestions and discussions with guest performance partners.

What have we implemented so far?

  • Replacing of house lighting to LED
  • Regulation of the heating by thermostats
  • Installation of motion detectors in all corridors to reduce lighting energy use
  • Restructuring of waste separation in offices and workshops
  • Switching to certified wood for set construction
  • Since 2022, calculation of stage set emissions and compensation for these
  • Built-in water filter in kitchens for refilling water bottles
  • Secure bicycle parking spaces for employees to make cycling more attractive
  • E-cargo bikes as company bikes
  • Introduction of a job ticket to create incentives to use public transport
  • Reducing the quantity of our print media
  • Exchange with artists on the topic of sustainability
  • Annual carbon report of our theatre since 2019
  • Train as preferred means of transport within Germany and closer Europe
  • Accommodation preferably in green certified hotels
  • Purchase of primarily certified materials

What are we planning in the future?

  • Implementing an environmental management system to ensure continuous improvement and to challenge ourselves
  • Making the Schaubühne's surroundings greener
  • Examining the requirements for installing a photovoltaic system on the roof of the theatre
  • Complete conversion of the stage lighting system to LED
  • And so much more...

With funding from the Federal Cultural Foundation's FOND ZERO, we are trialling the implementation of sustainability in the area of production using two productions and a salon series in our smallest venue as examples. The project »The studio as a laboratory for climate-neutral practice« aims to investigate which aspects of the production process have an impact on the footprint of a production and performance and where levers and adjusting moments can be found. New ideas and alternative materials, as well as questions about mobility and planning processes, will be scrutinised and tested in order to gain insights on a small scale and then implement them in the overall operation.

The project includes the productions »In Memory of Doris Bither« and »Ulster American«, as well as the salon series »BUCCI × ꒰(・ ‿ ・)꒱«
