Ku’damm 156

The Ku’damm 156 space is located on the ground floor of the neighboring building to the Schaubühne, part of the Mendelsohn architectural ensemble at Lehniner Platz. Currently an unoccupied shell, it is set to be developed into a rehearsal center and a new studio stage for the Schaubühne. In the meantime, it is already being used as a temporary performance venue for select productions.

The architecture firm Ortner & Ortner has developed a concept for the space, envisioning rehearsal, meeting, and workshop rooms for scenic, musical, choreographic, and theater education work. Additionally, a new performance space will be created, becoming the new home for the Schaubühne’s Studio, known for its diverse and experimental programming.

With its glass façade facing Ku’damm, the new venue will serve as a »window into the city», inviting artistic participation and fostering accessibility. A vibrant space for artistic creation will emerge—open to surprises, spontaneity, encounters, and public exchange.

Ku’damm 156 integrates into the ensemble of the WOGA complex, designed by Erich Mendelsohn in the 1920s. This includes the Schaubühne’s workshops and additional rehearsal stages in the rear part of the building. Together with Café Schaubühne across the street, the area between these architecturally significant buildings will be further revitalized, enhancing both the cultural and urban landscape.

The funding for this project is based on four pillars: support from the State of Berlin, funding from German federal programs and the European Union, as well as private contributions.

The Friends of the Schaubühne have committed to supporting the Ku’damm 156 project with up to €500,000, making a significant contribution to its realization. If you would like to be part of this forward-thinking project, learn more about how you can support us here.
