We are currently experiencing a historic turning point: in the USA, an unbridled Donald Trump is leading an ideological counter-revolution from the heart of the White House itself, threatening democratic institutions, basic norms, international relations, scientific freedom and minority rights. Whether what we are witnessing is the establishment of an autocracy, a coup, or the actions of a fascist-libertarian regime is not yet clear. What is certain is that Trump and his heterogenous coalition of evangelical Christians, tech oligarchs and MAGA (»Make America Great Again«) supporters have abandoned any regard for civil liberties and the value of being guided by the truth. A gigantic rewriting machine has been set into motion, with the intention of »purging« American history and culture of the memory of violence and injustice. How and where can this attack on democracy and human rights be opposed somehow? What practices of criticism and opposition are necessary? What does antifascism mean today? What lessons from the past, what lessons from democratic liberation movements in other countries can help us in the present? And how much of what can be seen in the USA, how many right-wing, authoritarian power grabs are we also experiencing here, in Germany?
Streitraum is a monthly discussion series at the Schaubühne that has been moderated and curated by publicist and author Carolin Emcke since 2004. Scientists, writers, politicians, artists and other public figures are invited to join the debate. The Streitraum focuses on a new topic every season.
