Falk Richter

Falk Richter is an author, director and professor of performing arts. He studied directing at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. Since 1994 he has directed productions and written texts at national and international theaters and festivals, including the Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Münchner Kammerspiele, Schauspielhaus Zürich, Schauspiel Frankfurt, Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin, Royal Dramatic Theatre Stockholm, Théâtre National de L' Odeon Paris, International Theatre Amsterdam, Théâtre National de Bruxelles, Ruhrtriennale, Salzburg Festival and Festival d'Avignon. Richter has regularly directed at the Schaubühne Berlin since 2000. His best-known texts include »Gott ist ein DJ« (1999), »Electronic City« (2002), »Unter Eis« (2004), »TRUST« (2009) and »Small Town Boy« (2013), which have been translated into more than 35 languages and performed around the world. Multiple invitations to the Theatertreffen and Mülheimer Theatertage. 2014 »For The Disconnected Child« at the Schaubühne was awarded the Friedrich Luft Prize for best production. 2016 Awarded the 5th Poetry Lectureship for Drama at the University of Saarbrücken. 2018 Appointed Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) by the French government, in the same year invited to the Theatertreffen for his production of Elfriede Jelinek's »Am Königsweg« at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg and voted director and production of the year by the magazine Theater heute, as well as receiving the »Special Teddy Award« at the Berlinale. In 2024, Richter was elevated to the rank of »Officier des Arts et des Lettres« by the French government and was once again invited to the Theatertreffen and Mülheimer Theatertage with his play »The Silence«. The actor Dimitrij Schaad received several awards for his role as »Falk Richter« in Richter's autofictional production »The Silence«, including »Actor of the Year 2024« (Theater heute). Richter premiered his own adaptation of Shakespeare's King Lear at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm in September 2024.

Falk Richter's production »The Silence« was awarded the Friedrich-Luft-Preis 2024 for the best theatre production in Berlin or Potsdam.
