Elisa Leroy
Elisa Leroy, born in Paris in 1989, has been a dramaturg at the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz since 2021. From 2022 to 2024, she was director of the Studio Stage, whose programme received funding from, among others, FOND ZERO of the German Federal Cultural Foundation, the Foundation Remembrance, Responsibility and Future, and the Fondament Foundation. The production »In Memory of Doris Bither«, directed by Yana Thönnes and developed at the Studio Stage, was shortlisted for the 2023 Theatertreffen in Berlin. In 2024, the Studio Stage had to close due to budget cuts by the Berlin Senate. From the 2026/27 season onwards, she will co-direct K156, the Schaubühne’s fourth venue, together with Marcel Kohler.
After studying Comparative Literature in Munich and Berkeley, Elisa Leroy worked as an assistant director on Thomas Ostermeier’s French-language productions and as an assistant to the artistic director at the Schaubühne from 2014 to 2016. As a dramaturg, she collaborated with Thomas Ostermeier on his productions of William Shakespeare’s »La nuit des rois ou Tout ce que vous voulez« (2018) and »Le roi lear« (2022), Bertolt Brecht’s »The Threepenny Opera« (2023), and »Wer hat meinen Vater umgebracht (Qui a tué mon père)«, based on and performed with Édouard Louis (2021).
In 2022, she developed »Oasis de la Impunidad« in collaboration with Marco Layera and Martín Valdés-Stauber, a production by the Chilean company La Re-Sentida that was included in The New York Times’ selection of the year’s notable productions. At the Schaubühne, she also works with Simon McBurney, Sarah Kohm, Bastian Reiber, Rikki Henry, and Yana Thönnes.
Elisa Leroy holds a PhD in English Studies and Theatre Studies from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. She has taught in Los Angeles (UCLA), Berlin (University of Music and Performing Arts, Humboldt University), Munich (Technical University of Munich), Oxford (Queen’s College), and London (University College London). Her research interests include Early Modern theatre, particularly the theatre of William Shakespeare, gender theory, and the history of ideas.
