Katie Mitchell

Born in Reading. Studied English Literature at Magdalen College, Oxford. From 1996 to 1998, she was resident director at the Royal Shakespeare Company and from 2000 to 2004 at the Royal Court Theatre in London. Since 1994, she has directed productions at the National Theatre in London, where she was also part of the artistic leadership team. Directing work includes productions at the Schauspiel Köln, Schauspielhaus Hamburg and the Burgtheater in Vienna. Opera productions include those at the Welsh National Opera, the English National Opera in London, Salzburger Festspiele, in Aix-en-Provence, at Staatsoper Berlin, Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich and at De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam. Further opera and theatre productions in Dublin, Copenhagen, Milan, New York and Stockholm. For her contributions to theatre, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2009 and the British Academy’s President’s Medal in 2017. Katie Mitchell is also Professor of Theatre Directing at Royal Holloway University and a visiting lecturer in theatre directing at Columbia University, King’s College London and the University of Oxford. She is a recipient of the Nestroy Prize and the International Opera Award. To date, she has been invited to the Theatertreffen with four productions, most recently in 2025 with »The House of Bernarda Alba«. She has worked continuously with the Schaubühne since 2010.
