Arv og miljø

(»Will and Testament«)
(Oslo)
by Vigdis Hjorth
In a version by Kjersti Horn and Kristian Lykkeslet Strømskag
Director: Kjersti Horn

Stage B

Gastspiel

After the death of her father, Bergljot returns to a family she distanced herself from years ago. The catalyst is an inheritance dispute over two summer houses by the sea. What begins as a sibling rivalry over property gradually unearths repressed memories: old wounds and differing versions of past events. Bergljot’s accounts of her childhood are denied by her family. Closeness and loyalty disintegrate over the question of who is believed and whose memory is considered valid. For years, two parts of the family have existed side by side, separated by silence and guilt. »Arv og miljø« is a stage adaptation of the eponymous novel by Vigdis Hjorth (published in English as »Will and Testament«). Kjersti Horn directs it as a piece about the despair of standing up for a truth that is constantly discounted. How can you assert yourself against a system of dependency and denial? And what is the price of clinging to your own memory?

VIGDIS HJORTH, born in Oslo in 1959, is one of Norway’s most renowned writers. She has received numerous awards for her work, including the Norwegian Critics’ Prize and the Bokhandlerprisen, and has been nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize, the National Book Award and the International Booker Prize. Her most recent publication is the book »Repetition«.

KJERSTI HORN, born in 1977, has worked as a director for the Stockholms Stadsteater, Malmö Stadsteater, Dramaten in Stockholm and the Nationaltheatret in Oslo. Since 2025, she has been the artistic director of the Norske Teatret in Oslo.
