Geschlechtergerechtigkeit (AT)

A project by Polyrealisten
Direction: Wiebke Nonne

Since 1949, Germany’s constitutional law has stated: »Men and women are equal.« Since 1957, women have been allowed to manage their own assets and have a job without their husband’s permission … The child whose story is told here grows up, goes to school. Takes an apprenticeship, studies at university or doesn’t do any of the above. Falls in love with men, with women, with people. Changes their perspective, way of life, gender. Doesn’t see any reason to change anything. Is officially recognised as the third gender. Is paid better or worse for the same work. Doesn’t work at all. Is suddenly allowed to get married, will never get married, wants a wedding dress with ruffles. Gives birth to children. Was not even allowed to adopt children. Never wanted a family but is nonetheless not alone, cares for grandchildren, parents, or simply themselves. Feels disadvantaged, privileged, indifferent, demands justice … How have the images of men, women and all those in between, or those who eschew these categories, changed in recent decades? Which expectations, privileges, opportunities and experiences of discrimination go and went hand in hand with these role models? What has really happened when it comes to gender equality — in private life, at work, in the public sphere, in legislation? And what still needs to be done for equality to be truly realised? The Polyrealisten are a multi-generational drama group at the Schaubühne. This season its members are weaving together their personal experiences into a collective biography of a being who is simultaneously male, female, trans and genderfluid. Beginning with the year in which the oldest performer was born, the group are looking at the development of a society in which gender justice has long been desired but has not yet been achieved — and they are designing a future in which gender categories may no longer have any significance. The starting point for their research is themselves, their own experiences and biographies, their own visions.
