Stage A
In the new novel by Virginie Despentes, the stories of three characters collide after an Instagram post goes wrong. Rebecca is a famous actor in her fifties who comes from the same suburb as Oscar, a writer who has accusations of abuse hanging over him and who is suffering from writer’s block. Zoé, the third of the trio, left her job as a press secretary after having been assaulted by Oscar to become a feminist social media activist. In a type of epistolary novel for the 21st century, the three protagonists go on a digital tour de force through social debates and conflicts: #MeToo, drugs, abuse of power and feminism all play a part. In the end, Despentes’ characters overcome their anger, frustration, neuroses and loneliness and discover the value of friendship. Virginie Despentes is a pugnacious voice and one of the most important figures in contemporary French literature. Thomas Ostermeier staged the first part of her trilogy »The Life of Vernon Subutex« for the Schaubühne in June 2021. As part of the FIND, the author is now presenting her new novel »Dear Asshole« for the first time in Germany at the Schaubühne.
