Europe is at a crossroads. After the British parliament has revealed itself to be dysfunctional and Brexit has demonstrated the logic of overly populist referenda, the question remains: in which direction is European democracy developing? Numerous neo-nationalist voices are mobilising for the European Parliament elections to demand an explicitly anti-liberal Europe. What is Europe lacking? Which democratic deficits must be acknowledged and remedied? Which social discontents are justified and must be better addressed? Who is being represented in this Europe, and who is not?
