DRAGÓN

by Guillermo Calderón
Scenic Reading
Directed by Bastian Reiber

Translated from the Spanish by Franziska Muche

Art that unites aesthetics and activism and pierces the boundary between reality and fiction! A total work of art! These are the minimum standards the art collective Dragón sets for themselves. Their next scheduled feat: a re-enactment of the murder of the Guyanese freedom fighter Walter Rodney, staged as a real fake bomb attack with an explosion, blood and body parts. But the ambitious idea quickly comes into conflict with the troupe’s high moral ambitions: are severed rubber arms of a Black skin tone politically correct? Are they not actually perpetuating colonial violence when whites stage the murder of a Black man? The troupe quickly falls into a self-destructive spiral of bigotry and narcissism. And the only possible way out is: betrayal. With a trenchant sense of humour, the Chilean playwright Guillermo Calderón delineates the caricature of an art scene in search of the superlative.

This staged reading of DRAGÓN emerged from the »New Spanish-Language Drama« publication project initiated by the translator Franziska Muche which makes contemporary plays from the Ibero-American cultural area accessible to German theatre makers and readers. The first part of the project will be published in book form in November. In a panel discussion following the reading, translators and publishers will discuss Spanish-language drama in Germany, from discovering and selecting original texts to the German translations being released in book-form by publishing houses.
