What does radical humanism mean? Are there limits to our ability to empathize with others? What does remembering history oblige us to do? Are there limits to our duty to speak in the name of human rights? Or must nothing prevent us from seeing others as part of a universal »we«?

Carolin Emcke was asking herself these questions long before October 7 and the war in Gaza. Since then, they have become even more urgent. Ultimately, they concern an existential question: What counts as a human being? For more than 20 years, Carolin Emcke has travelled to Israel and Palestine. Most recently, she was there to speak with people from Be’eri and Jenin, Tel Aviv and Ramallah, and to shed light on the blind spots of empathy in public discourse here.
